Closet Visit : Joanna Williams

Remember Joanna Williams from my last studio visit? I went back and shot her closet too and I'm so glad I did.

I thought I was pretty good at thrift shopping before I saw Joanna's stuff. No. This lady deserves "the Queen of thrifting" title! It was so fun to go through all the pieces she's been collecting for a long time and I loved the stories behind each piece. I was also impressed by her high street brand collection as well. I would see some great contemporary stuff and ask her where she got them and her answer is "Steve Madden" or "Zara". How come I've never seen those before?! I want to go shopping/ treasure hunting with her.

Thanks to Joanna for the great interview and being patient and sweet during the long 3 hours of shooting. She's a stylish angel.

Describe your personal style.
I would say it's a mix of bohemian and classic with a nod towards the '70s, but my mood is usually what dictates my clothing choices on any given day.

What are your favorite places to shop?
Flea markets, thrift/vintage stores, Opening Ceremony, Project No. 8, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, eBay, Creatures of Comfort, TenOverSix, Casbah Cafe's charming little shop, Scout, Zara, and J. Crew.

Who are your favorite designers?
Antonio Marras for Kenzo and his ability to stick to his vision and consistently turn out beautiful, artful clothes; Rachel Comey for her pared down aesthetic that she so perfectly mixes with whimsical details; Isabel Marant for her free-spirited approach (although I must say I prefer her collections from past seasons), Phoebe Philo for capturing the fashion zeitgeist and setting the tone; Dries Van Noten for never compromising his idea of design and for his ability to take something so basic and give it a luxurious twist; and Miuccia Prada because she does whatever the hell she wants and does it well.

There are also a few accessory designers whom I admire including Sonia Boyajian, the ladies behind Anndra Neen, Peruvian designer Meche' Correa, and that genius accessories team behind Marni.

Do you have any items you've been eyeing for winter?
I am pining for these Les Prairies de Paris camel-colored boots that I just saw in San Francisco. I also want some good socks. Weird, I know, but I wear a lot of socks with boots, peep-toes, wedges, etc. so I'm always looking for something fun and cozy.

IMG_8502

Which fashion blogs & magazines do you read?
I don't think there's enough room to write! As far as blogs, I go through phases where I spend hours reading them and phases where I can't bare to look at one more thing online. But my regular blogs/sites that I am pretty dedicated to are: Identical Eye, Scout-Holiday, July Stars, Cafe' con Lesley, The Moment, Garance Dore', The Sartorialist, Refinery 29, Style.com, Jeana Sohn (duh), The Selby, and Dossier Journal. I read a lot of magazines but some of my favorites are: World of Interiors, Elle Decoration UK, Vogue, ANP Quarterly, Elle, Monocle, Hobo, Lula, and Purple. Oh, and Everyday Food. I love me some Martha Stewart.

Do you keep your old clothes or do you keep your closet small and organized?
I keep old clothes that have sentimental value, or pieces that I know I'll wear forever. My closet is small but not by choice, hence the sagging pole being weighed down by my wardrobe. I am definitely pretty organized when it comes to my clothes and accessories. Everything has a place. It's kind of funny because when I was a teenager and in my early 20's my room and closet were total disaster zones and I could never find anything because I would just throw clothes in piles on the floor. I have no idea how I came to be so organized. Now I really like to take care of my things.

IMG_8245

Are there any key pieces you find yourself wearing constantly?
Chunky cardigans, grey knit leggings, roomy blouses, my high-waisted vintage Levi's, and ethnic dresses. I also live in my cut-offs during the summer.

IMG_8442

What was your last purchase for your wardrobe?
A chunky cardigan from Zara. It's a mushroom color, comes with a hood, and has random canvas ties scattered throughout in case I want to bundle up. I am crazy with the cardigans and always searching for another great one.

Can you give us smart shopping advice?
Buy what you love. I know that sounds cliche' and ridiculous, but don't buy those things that you're pondering over. You'll regret spending the money and wish you would have bought something else. Another piece of advice: don't worry about the money if you know you'll get lots of mileage out of it.

Do you have any stories about amazing deals you've gotten on awesome pieces?
I have a few, but there are two that are recent and must be talked about. One I purchased from a favorite antique shop -- a creamy champagne silk gown with a built in corset that is torn to shreds and should be in a museum. It has capped sleeves that are overlayed in crocheted webs with gold embellishments. The entire bottom also has crocheted webs with gold beading and when you walk all you see is this work of art in movement. It belonged to a Spanish princess and is from the 1940's. I paid $85 for it.

My second steal that I am not sure I will ever be able to top: a vintage black Céline shoulder bag for $1. It cost me more to have it re-polished, but it was well worth it. I bought it at an estate sale and they obviously did not know what they had. Lucky me!

IMG_8590

Who are your style icons?
Frida Kahlo is my ultimate style icon. Her style was projected in everything she did, from her paintings to her photographs to her wardrobe to her attitude. She was a fearless female and her choice of color and attire always inspires me. Some other women who have style that inspires me are Liz Goldwyn, Olya Thompson, Vanessa Traina, Taylor Tomasi-Hill, and Stephanie Seymour.

IMG_8117

Current trend you like, current trend you dislike.
I really gravitate towards anything that I feel I can incorporate into my wardrobe and make it look fresh and interesting, regardless if it's a trend or not. All I can say is that I'm happy that I got rid of all those Coca-Cola polo shirts and swimsuits that I had in elementary school. That was definitely a bad trend and I'm cringing as I type this.

Closet Visit : Simone LeBlanc

I met Simone through the internet. Her awesome blog and website made me think she must have an amazing closet too. I asked her if I could shoot her closet and it was a "Yes".

Without knowing much about her, other than thinking her blog was really cool, I booked her. But then I had a chance to meet her in person at a dinner party before the shoot. She was wearing a beautiful cozy jacket with brown laced up ankle boots and Clare Vivier's red mini sac (Clare's bags are seriously taking over the world and it's a good thing). Even her sparkly little ring caught my attention. I know,, I've became a creep. I observe people's outfits and memorize. Ha.

Anyways I loved her style and her closet visit was a blast! I'm so glad I made another good friend through this project. (It's the best part of doing this series!) Many thanks to Simone for sharing her beautiful closet and making the shoot super fun and easy. xo

Tell us about Simone LeBlanc Inc.
My company offers personal styling, gifts, and creative services. I’m a creative director for my clients personal lives – this can be the simple day to day creative details, or projects of a broader scope.
My specialty is custom pieces – designing an concept and finding the right resources to make the creative vision happen. This can mean creating an illustrated family history as told through a leather bound book, to making custom shoes, to designing a significant piece of heirloom jewelry for example.

Describe your style.
romantic, a touch of classic and a bit imperfect. My favorite outfits feel right in multiple occasions.

What things in your closet are most precious to you?
My antique Ikat scarf given to be by my Mom when I turned 18. I remember her wearing it when I was a kid, and loving the repetitive pattern. It seemed mysterious. She finally let me have it when she knew I would take care of it properly. There’s a great story behind that piece as well.
My New Years gift to myself this year – a pumice colored Rick Owens leather jacket. The grey is almost a lavender color, and I love it. It was an investment, and it felt great doing that for myself.
My apc fishermans cardigan. I feel transported to foggy Point Reyes when I wear it.
I treasure the pieces that have memories and experiences associated with them.

What are your favorite place to shop?
I love well selected options, a secret score and some peace and quiet – whether I’m shopping for work or personal. Mameg, Barneys,Ten over Six, Creatures of Comfort, The Way we Wore – those spots are a pleasure to be in. I like to head out of town for vintage…

Who are your favorite designers?
Dries, Lanvin, Phillip Lim, Isabel Marant Rachel Comey. I have a well worn collection of Schiesser tshirts, love mixing in a Steven Alan button down, and Jcrew for an easy off color cardigan or sweatshirt.
I’ve been wearing wren jackets and tanks, clare vivier bags and Annie Costello Brown jewelry as well. Smart design that’s on point and adds some understated flavor.

IMG_7718

Who are your style icons?
Courageous people who live their dream. there’s nothing more attractive than that.

Do you ever get distracted when you are shopping for work and end up buying bunch of stuff for yourself?
You are adorable and I love this question. Not at all, actually. I become very focused when I work, and it’s a completely different mind set between shopping for myself and for work. I’ll clock in on a pattern or shape and tag it for a client. I’m building an idea and there’s no time for distractions…

Do you have any items you've been eyeing for winter?
Vanessa Bruno motorcycle/cowboy boots. They look perfectly worn in and the kind I can muss around in.

5 things you can't live without.
Fabric, family & friends (these count as one), good food, singing and dare I say it, my computer. All things that bring me pleasure every day.

What was your last purchase for your wardrobe?
Ha! My Wren leapord box swing jacket. It’s cropped and it’s perfect for day or night. It seems you and I both love it so much, that we made a video about it….

( I have the same Wren jacket and I love it, too. The video is on the way. -Jeana- )

Do you have any stories about amazing deals you've gotten on awesome pieces?
My gold crunchy Lanvin bag that looks like it was dug up from an antique archive somewhere – I was coveting that piece, I felt it in my bones. It was given to me as an incredible gift - by a client a month later.
My Proenza Schouler coat – the one that looks like a 1900’s riding coat. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and it was sold out. One piece was returned to a store, and it went on sale 80% off. Beautiful things find the people that appreciate them.

Yes or No

I found my old H&M dress while I was organizing my closet. I bought it last winter and wore it twice. It's pretty but a little too girly for my taste. I tried it on again. I like the print,, the back's cute. Hmm,,, I'll try to wear it again. maybe with a grey or carmel chunky cardigan and laced up ankle boots. (one problem: I don't have the cardigan or boots..)

Loving fall

It's been raining in L.A. As I get older I like rain more...I'm loving making cappuccinos, mini pumpkins, burning candles, red wine, new sweaters, soft pajamas, rain sound, reading cookbooks, cuddling with my dogs, my hunter rain boots, hot noodle soup, gold eye shadow and searching for cozy blankets.

Closet Visit : Deborah Kaplan

Deborah Kaplan is a screen writer who lives with her husband, lovely daughter (one more on the way! ) and their dog "Monkey" in Beverly Hills.

Heather told me "Jeana, you've got to do Deb's closet.", and Clare said Deb is one of her style heros. Needless to say, I was so curious. When I finally visited her closet, I was like "Forget, Carry Bradshaw!". I was dying over her amazing Marni collection (you all know how I feel about Marni). If I didn't have to do the photo shoot, I would have had spend the whole day trying on everything in her closet. I asked Deb to show me her favorites and it was not easy. There were so many amazing things in her collection that she loves (how do you chose between your babies?!). I loved how she treats them like precious art pieces in a closet and I could see her LUCKY daughters wearing them in 20 years.

Deb was so photogenic and natural in front of the camera. I kept saying "Are you sure you are not a model?". She is one beautiful woman with brains.

Describe your style.
Eclectic and a sucker for drama. I love a big collar, a huge accessory. As I get older, I'm moving towards quality over quantity. And every year I vow to transition to some sort of "uniform dressing", but there are so many beautiful things out there... how can you possibly??

Which Fashion blogs & magazines do you read?
I read The Cut pretty much every day. Wayne Tippets Street Style Aesthetic. I'm also enjoying NAAG, Agyness Deyn's new-ish blog. On paper -- the classics: Vogue, Bazaar, W ...

IMG_6134
IMG_6124
Do you have your favorite Etsy sellers you'd like to share?
I hate to give up my best Etsy source but I'm crazy about The Feather Feet Beat. Her shop is listed under "smoobage" -- she has made a ton of feather earrings for me. Her combinations are wild and since I don't have pierced ears, they're also light and comfortable enough to wear all day. I browse on Archive Vintage -- before I was a mom I had lots of time to comb through racks at vintage stores but that's an activity from a former life now.

IMG_6348
IMG_6125
What are your favorite place to shop?
Barney's, Creatures Of Comfort ... I dream of going to the new Lanvin boutique in N.Y.C. but it's a very expensive dream so I'm putting it aside for the time being.

Does your little girl play dress up in your closet?
She loves to put on my shoes and jewelry... I'm so reluctant to get rid of things I no longer wear -- I'm saving everything for my daughters. When YSL first launched the Muse bag, you could get it embossed -- I put Keaton's initials on it instead of mine so it could be hers one day. My mom saved nothing, so I'm clearly running in the other direction!

IMG_6384
IMG_6363
Which items are your most favorite things in your closet?
My Risto Galaxy dress, a black corseted Vivienne Westwood, and the gold Hermes Medor my husband bought me. They don't produce it in gold any longer so I'm very protective of it. I also have this ridiculously huge Ann Demeulemeester black sweater with ribbon ties that I refuse to part with. It looks like a ratty old muppet and is completely unflattering but it's the coziest thing I own.

IMG_6381
IMG_6365
Who are your style icons?
Cate Blanchett, Talitha Getty, Jane Birkin, Loulou de la Falaise

Current trend you like, current trend you dislike.
Happy to welcome back wide-legged trousers. As far as dislikes go, I'd like to say "to each his own"... but I could live without formal shorts and those dresses that could pass for shirts. I'm content with being able to bend over and pick up my keys without showing everyone my name and address.

IMG_6424
Can you give us smart shopping advice?
Can you give me smart shopping advice?
Okay, the only thing I've really figured out is that you needn't buy anything in L.A. until it goes on sale. It doesn't get cold enough to wear winter or warm enough to wear summer until sale season begins anyway... Also if you find pants that look outstanding on you, buy two and have one tailored for heels and one for flats. Leesa Evans, my brilliant costume designer friend, taught me that one!

IMG_6311
IMG_6182
Who are your favorite designers?
Dries, Maison Martin Margiela, Marni, Isabel Marant ... I am waiting not-so-patiently for the Vivienne Westwood store to open. Her clothes definitely suit me. Sadly, I'm always attracted to items that look good on boyish figures (which I don't have) and I don't think I'll ever learn my lesson -- I should probably wear Westwood more often. I also really love Tsumori Chisato, Risto Bimbiloski and I just bought my first piece of Suno. Their prints are really fun... For shoes, I love LD Tuttle, Rachel Comey, Margiela and my Swedish Hasbeens. I have a great collection of Clare Vivier clutches and think Jerome Dreyfus also makes very smart bags.

Do you have any items you've been eyeing for fall?
I would be thrilled to own a Celine luggage tote but it feels really extravagant right now. I'm shopping my closet this fall, to be honest, but ask me again when the Celine resort collection comes in. It's breathtaking!!

Where do you find inspiration for your work.
I eavesdrop, I read a lot of books, I bake. I get a lot of my best ideas in the shower.
