When I was growing up in the suburbs of New Jersey, my neighbors kept deer in their yard. I used to peer through the slats of the worn wooden fence to watch the deer graze. At the time, I thought it was surprising and incredible that my neighbors kept deer on their property. Now, years later, it strikes me how eccentric and affluent these neighbors must’ve been, since we were living only ten minutes from the George Washington Bridge—certainly not farmville. I wish I had a baby white-tailed deer.
